A lymphatic drainage massage doesn't stop the moment you get off the couch. How you spend the rest of your day can make the calm, light feeling last. Here's the simple aftercare I give my clients in Llandudno, and a bit about why.
Straight after your treatment
Get up slowly
You've been lying down and deeply relaxed, sometimes for 90 minutes. Sit up for a moment before you stand, especially if you're prone to feeling light-headed.
Have a drink of water
Many people feel thirsty afterwards. Drinking water is a good habit and helps you feel refreshed. To be clear, it isn't about "flushing out toxins", which is a myth. It's simply good, sensible care for your body.
Expect to need the loo
Some clients notice they need to pass urine soon after a session. That's nothing to worry about.
For the rest of the day
Move gently
Your lymphatic system relies on muscle movement to keep lymph flowing, so a gentle walk is ideal. If you're in Llandudno, a slow stroll along the North Shore promenade or through Happy Valley Gardens is about as good as aftercare gets. Save the high-intensity workout for another day.
Breathe deeply
Slow belly breaths change the pressure in your chest and are thought to help the deeper lymph vessels do their job. A few minutes of deep breathing in the evening is a lovely way to hold on to that post-treatment calm.
Eat simply
Nothing strict is needed. Light, nourishing food and not too much alcohol will help you feel your best.
Protect the calm
If you can, avoid rushing into a hectic afternoon. Many women sleep particularly well the night after a treatment, so an early night is a good idea.
Things to skip on the day
- Intense exercise
- Heavy drinking
- Very hot saunas or steam rooms if you tend to feel light-headed
- Sitting still for hours, for example a long drive, if you can avoid it
What's normal to feel?
Common and completely normal: feeling relaxed, sleepy, light, a bit thirsty or a bit emotional. Gentle, nurturing touch can sometimes release more than you expect.
Less common: some people feel a little tired or have a mild headache later in the day. Rest and water usually help.
Not expected: significant pain, new swelling, breathlessness, chest pain or feeling very unwell. If you experience anything like that, seek medical advice straight away, and let me know.
Between appointments
The habits that help after your treatment help every day: moving regularly, breaking up long periods of sitting, deep breathing and staying hydrated. Read my guide to supporting your lymphatic system naturally, or find out how often to book.
