"I just feel puffy." "I'm so bloated." These are two of the most common reasons women get in touch with me. They're real, uncomfortable feelings, but they can have quite different causes, and lymphatic drainage massage suits some of them better than others.
Puffiness and water retention
This is the heavy, swollen feeling many of us notice in our ankles, legs, fingers or face. Common everyday triggers include:
- Sitting or standing for long periods
- Long drives and flights
- Hot weather
- Hormonal changes around your period
- Salty meals, alcohol and poor sleep
This is where lymphatic drainage massage fits most naturally. The treatment is designed to work with your body's natural fluid movement, and feeling "less puffy" and "lighter" is exactly what many clients describe afterwards. Everyone responds differently, and it's not a permanent fix, but as part of a routine alongside movement and good habits, a lot of women find it genuinely helps them feel more comfortable.
Tummy bloating
Bloating in the stomach is usually about your digestion: trapped wind, what you've eaten, constipation, or conditions like IBS. It's a different thing from fluid retention.
A full-body lymphatic drainage massage includes gentle work on the abdomen, and many women find the slow, soothing strokes and the deep relaxation help them feel more comfortable. But it isn't a treatment for digestive conditions, and it won't fix the underlying cause of regular bloating.
When to see your GP instead
Please don't book a massage in place of getting these checked:
- Bloating that is persistent, happens most days, or lasts three weeks or more. The NHS lists persistent bloating as a possible symptom of ovarian cancer, so it's always worth getting checked, even if it's very likely to be something simpler.
- Swelling in one leg only, especially with pain, warmth or redness, which could be a blood clot and needs urgent attention.
- Sudden or severe swelling, or swelling with breathlessness or chest pain. Call 999 or NHS 111.
- Swelling that doesn't go down overnight or keeps getting worse.
- Bloating with weight loss, blood in your poo, or a change in bowel habits.
Everyday habits for a lighter feeling
- Break up long periods of sitting with a short walk
- Raise your legs for 10–15 minutes in the evening
- Drink water regularly through the day
- Try slow belly breathing to relax your body
- Notice whether particular foods or drinks make you feel worse
